Bad news are multiplying for Sun customers since the acquisition by Oracle. IBM and HP took the opportunity to encourage them to migrate their solutions. Bad news are accumulating for Sun clients. After they've been frightened about MySQL which pushed many companies to find alternatives, Oracle puts Solaris under a closed and paid license. Solaris users, who had been using it for free until now, must now sign a paid support contract to receive updates of the operating system on Sun servers. This new event has begun to push the brand's customers to HP and IBM, whose policies are clear: their Unix is paid.
HP and IBM intend to make the most of this situation. They offer attractive packages to encourage customers to migrate from Sun solutions. IBM has for example dedicated 500 million dollars to attract Sun partners to convert customers. Over a hundred have already signed, particularly around Smart Analytics solutions which integrate software and hardware supply and compete with Exadata by Sun-Oracle.
