"We are witnessing an acceleration in the adoption of cloud computing" is the one-sentence summary of the latest survey by Gartner.
Some figures- According to Gartner last survey, the "Cloud" turnover should achieve 68 billion dollars in 2010. Approximately 2/3 of this figure will be made in the United States. In 5 years, the firm even predicts that this market will represent 112 billion.
The Reasons of a success- The main reasons relied upon by analysts is the flexibility and the price of outsourced model. Crisis has led organizations to track each expense. An IT solution that can provide functionality at lower cost and with greater agility (just remember that time is money) cannot ignored in this context. Indeed the Cloud is said to be less expensive than a conventional solution since it is, by definition, a pay-per-use.
Regions and sectors most involved- Unsurprisingly, Europe and the United States are the regions which should experience the strongest growth in the adoption of these solutions. Without forgetting Japan. The developing countries should not catch up. Regarding sectors, financial services and manufacturing are the biggest pioneers in the adoption of hosted services. Communication and high-tech industries has also a significant use of the Cloud. Finally, public sectors show a strong interest for a possible adoption.
However, Ben Pring, Vice-President of Research at Gartner, acknowledges that "although interest in the Cloud grows, many companies have strong concerns about the Cloud safety and the availability of such services". The survey does not mention the confidentiality of data stored by a third, but you can read our latest articles on this subject.
Finally, this report definitively takes the bet that the Cloud is the future of IT services.
